The results are in...

We went to Adam's "result" appointment last Monday fearing the worst but hoping for the best. We ended up leaving pretty deflated. We got bad news on top of more bad news.  I'll cut right to the chase. Adam has not just one heart problem but two.  The electrical issue that started this all, now has a name, he has what's called supra ventricular tachycardia and Yes,  he was also diagnosed with his mom's heart condition,  Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.  So what does this mean? In a nut shell...a life style change, better eating and more exercising.  As explained before supra ventricular tachycardia is an electrical issue.  He was given a choice to take medication for the rest of his life or have the surgery to fix it.  After hearing all the risks involved with the surgery I was all for the meds, but even after hearing the risks Adam was for the surgery. I completely understand where he's coming from. It's better to cure one and then only have the other to deal with, rather than taking meds and then possibly more meds later on for the other.  We agreed that he would take the meds for 2 weeks and see what happens. After that he has another appointment and a decision to make.  It would be so nice to be able to cure the supra ventricular tachycardia so then we could completely concentrate on the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, but I'm so nervous about the surgery.  It's a simple surgery with only a 8-10 hour stay in the hospital but there's always risk, especially when it comes to the heart.  They would put him under, and then run a camera and laser up to his heart.  Then they will purposely bring on an episode so they can see exactly what's causing it and then zap the wire.  With the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy he just needs to take care of himself. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy  is when the heart muscle becomes enlarged and has to work harder causing it to get bigger and eventually it overworks itself  and gives up. So staying in shape will help it not have to work so hard.  Has his mom been in better shape there's no reason she couldn't have lived longer. But, we really don't have anything to go off of.  His grandpa that had it died young from unrelated circumstances and his mom also, died young.  Anyone else in his family (brothers and uncles) that have it are still too young to tell.  So we're all kinda going at it blindly. We don't know what the life expectancy is. We do know that the best thing he can do is stay in shape.  However, he needs to exercise to be fit but not to be an athlete. If he were to train for a century or a marathon it could kill him. We've all heard about the athletes that in the middle of a game just kill over, well, they most likely had undiagnosed Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. We've always known that mom had a bad heart but no one ever really knew what it was. It's only been the last 10 years that we've been able to get some answers and a diagnosis.  One thing we have learned is that it is hereditary and we'll need to get our children checked it there late teens.
By the end of the appointment I didn't know if I was going to cry or throw up and Adam just needed to get a few cuss words out and then he felt a little better. We left the appointment and went to lunch. Neither one of us had an appetite after the appointment, but it ended up being exactly what we needed. Just to sit back and visit. We both felt much better and ready to face the future. Again, I find much comfort and peace in his patriarticle blessing and feel as long as we have faith all will be fine. One thing his mom did was start to pull away and become secluded. Had she stayed active and involved that would have defiantly helped her as well, so we were excited when Adam received a new calling...2nd co. in the Elders Quorumn...and yes, I'm still YW prez.  It will be good to keep him engaged in the work and let's face it, we can use all the blessings we can get right now.  Just another of life's Hurtles, right? But still the same Life is Good! We feel so blessed to have each other, our three amazing daughters, our families and the gospel.

Update on Adam!

It's been 4 weeks since his scare. Since then he has had 5 episodes, three littler ones and 2 pretty good ones. The last one was one week ago and was a good one. He was up laying on our bed and I went up to ask him something. As soon as I walked in I knew something was up. He was as pale as a ghost and clammy. I asked him if he had just had one and he said he was having one right then. I walked over and put my hand on his chest. I could feel his heart racing and pounding.  He did one of his "shock and stop" techniques (I made that name up myself) and immediately I could feel his heart slow down and get back on track. It was the weirdest feeling. I can't even imagine what it makes him feel like though.  That was the last one he's had up to date and is the longest he's gone without having one.  Last Friday, was his ECO.  The entire test took about 40 minutes. It was interesting to watch. It was basically a ultrasound of his heart. They took dozens of pictures and video of his heart in different spots, in different colors, some with sound (his heart beats) and some with him breathing heavily, holding his breath, flexing his stomach muscles etc.  We will get the results from that test in another week.  We are hoping it was just the electrical issue that we can manage on our own and that it's not connected with his mom's heart condition (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy).  But either way, we'll be fabulous and move forward. Another thing moving forward are the hospital bills...wow...we've only received a few of them so far mainly for the ER stay and the ambulance ride...thank goodness for insurance and monthly payment plans...oh well, life goes on right? No need complaining about it.  Anyway, I'll keep you updated and let you know about the results.

Scariest day of my life!

Monday, December 20th We received word this morning that some friends of ours (Ben and Stacy’s best friends) had lost their two little boys in a car accident in Logan due to bad weather. It really hit be hard and I spent the day crying off and on. I just couldn’t believe it. Teri and Jace are such great people and I just couldn’t imagine what they were going through. They have 9 children and lost their two youngest boys Bridger 10 and M’gwire 7 years old. When they first named Bridger, I fell in love with the name and knew if I ever had a boy I would name him Bridger. My heart just ached for their family and by that night I was so tired.

When Adam came home we found our second wind and decided to install the carpet in the preschool. We were up until 2:00 am and by the time our bodies fell into bed we were exhausted.
Tuesday, December 21st
Around 3:00 am I woke up to the Adam getting out of bed and going into the bathroom. I asked him if everything was okay and he said “I don’t know” I jumped out of bed and went into the bathroom. He was just sitting there with this completely spent look on his face. I asked him what was wrong. He was holding his chest and said “I don’t know” I said “Does your chest hurt” he said “Yes.” I asked him if he was okay and he said “give me a minute” and he continued to sit there holding his chest. After a couple seconds I asked if he thought he was having a heat attack and he just looked at me. I asked him two or three times if he wanted me to call the hospital and ask if we should take him in. I knew if I just did it he would be mad so I didn’t right away. But when I asked him again, he said “Maybe” This was the scariest moment for me. Anyone that knows Adam knows that he doesn’t like hospitals, doctors or ambulances. He will avoid them at all costs. So when he said “maybe” I knew it was bad. My heart started pounding as I ran frantically looking for a phone. I was originally going to just call the hospital but ended up dialing 911. My heart was pounding through my chest as I talked to the operator. But not as bad as Adam’s. He said he’s heart felt like someone had a hammer and was trying to get out of his chest, it was racing and he couldn’t get it to slow down. He managed to get dressed and make his way downstairs to the recliner. I had 911 on the line and was answering all their questions. Everything she asked, “is he pale, is he clammy, does he have chest pain,“ I was answering yes to. I thought for sure he was having a heart attack…at 35...no way. I was instructed to give him an aspirin and to continue to keep him calm. Adam has very dark complexion, so seeing him so pale was scary, also he is such a strong man inside and out and it was strange to see him looking so fragile. The operator assured me the ambulance was on it’s way. I ran upstairs to get dressed and came back down to assure Adam they were coming, At this point he was pretty unresponsive. I rubbed his face and tried to get him to talk to me, but he just stared past me. I frantically asked where they were and she said they should be there. I ran outside and saw the ambulance shining a spotlight on the houses looking for addresses. Being in the back and off the main road I figured they couldn’t find us so I ran down the driveway in my bare feet and waved them down. They followed me home. I was comforted knowing he was in good hands, but still scared to death. The whole experience was interesting in a sense that I was scared beyond anything I have ever felt thinking I might lose him, but at the same time I felt comforted by his patriarticle blessing. He has a beautiful blessing that I have found comfort in many times throughout our marriage as he has traveled and gone on business trips and this time was no different. I felt everything was going to be okay, but just seeing him in that state was terrifying. They got him all hooked up and talked to him about going in the ambulance. By about this point his heart had slowed down and he was feeling a little better and was a little hesitant about going. As soon as I realized they were going to take him I called my mom and asked if she could come sit with the girls. She headed right over. I was so thankful that during all the commotion that the girls remained asleep and didn’t wander downstairs. The EMT’s told me it was best to follow in my car so we would have a vehicle to come home in. I agreed but really I should have gone with him because I was in no shape to drive. My mom still wasn’t here by the time they got him loaded up so I called his dad to walk over.

As soon as he got there I left and followed the ambulance. I called my mom to let her know I was on my way and that Adam’s dad was there. She talked to me all the way there, which helped keep me calm. I ended up passing her on the way. When she got to my house she was surprised to see Marilee. Dad had left to come into the hospital. The two of them spent the morning hanging out and chatting. The drive was so long. I don’t remember it ever taking that long to drive across town. Adam said that he was felling much better in the ambulance and was thinking it was just a fluke and didn’t want to go the hospital. Once we got there, they took him back to get settled and I had to wait in the ER waiting room. Having a minute to finally sit and breathe I lost it. I just sat there and cried and cried until they called me back. Adam looked good but miserable. He just wanted out of there. We hung out for a couple hours getting tests, x-rays, talking to the doctors and waiting for results. Adam’s dad and my dad showed up to give him a blessing. Adam’s dad stepped out in the waiting room allowing my dad to stay in the room for a while. After about 2 hours of being there and thinking it was just a fluke. It started again. His heart rate went from 100 to 180 beats a minute in a matter of seconds. This was the scariest moment for both of us, because at that point we knew that it wasn’t nothing. It was something. I remember thinking “I just want to get out of here; I could hardly handle the stress of it all and just wanted to go home. I was thankful that my dad was still in the room with me. The doctors came running in and got him hooked up to another machine to track it. It only lasted a couple minutes. Unlike the first one at home that lasted about an hour. After it passed we just sat and watched the heart monitor waiting and wondering if another one was coming. His heart rate never went back to under 100. It stayed at 100 and would get up to 120 and then go back down. It was very nerve racking sitting there watching this number. Sure enough about a half hour later his heart started racing again. They were able to get it recorded on the ECG machine so they could determine what was going on. They had already ruled out heart attack and also diabetes which was good, seeing that it is in the family. There is always that fear there that he could inherit his mom’s heart condition, so that was always in the back of our minds. He looked so worn out, you could tell that these were wearing him out. After they were able to track and record it they were able to give some medication to regulate his heart rate. Within a few minutes his heart rate was back to beating at 70-80 beats a minute and he was feeling pretty good. My dad headed out and Adam’s dad came back in. We hung out for another hour waiting for results. The result was that it was a short circuit in his heart electrical system. The heart has all sorts of wires that sends impulses from the upper chambers to the lower chambers which causes it to beat. But Adam’s heart was sending some of the impulses down and some of them back up. The ones that were going back up would set off a domino effect with one beat hitting another until it was racing. They gave him a prescription for some medication that would keep him regulated. But there was still a chance he could still become irregular. We finally were able to go home around 8:00am with instructions to get into a cardiologist within the next couple days. Good thing we already have a great one. Dr. Brizalaro was his mom’s doctor and is also his two brothers that have inherited the heart condition. On the way home I called Adam’s boss who is also our bishop and told him Adam wouldn’t be and all about our adventure.

We drove home to find that the girls were still asleep and that my mom had cleaned my kitchen. The girls had been frosting cookies that day and it was a mess. Thank goodness for mom’s. She hung out for a minute getting an update and then stayed while I ran to the gas station to get Adam a Gatorade. After she left, we tried to get some sleep. We were both so nervous that it would start again that neither one of us slept. Anytime we did actually drift off the phone would ring and wake us up. As word continued to get out the phone continued to ring. After about an hour the girls woke up. We told them about all the adventures they missed. They couldn’t believe they had slept through it all. Although Gentry said at one point she got up and came downstairs and saw Grandma cleaning the kitchen and went back to bed. They are such good kids and completely took care of each other and entertained themselves so we could rest. Finally we were able to get some sleep and had a good 2 hour nap. We spent the day resting, watching movies and getting phone calls and visitors. We called and got him an appointment for the following day and ran and got his prescription. He was feeling pretty good. That night I didn’t sleep a wink I just laid there and listened to him breathe, waiting for another episode. Luckily, one never came and I was grateful that the meds were doing their job. Adam got up the next morning and went into the office just for a meeting. He stayed at the office until his appointment. I dropped the girls off at my mom’s and met him at his appointment. I had never met Dr. Brizalaro but fell in love with him instantly. He is a hoot. So funny and energetic, yet so knowledgeable. The appointment went great and we were able to leave there less stressed. He confirmed that it was an electrical issue. But no one seems to know why. So he scheduled an ECO to see if it’s linked to his mom’s condition. So in a couple weeks we’ll know more on that. But in the mean time I am comforted knowing that it is not life threatening, however it can be dangerous if the episodes last a while. He also showed us some techniques on how to shock the heart to get in back on rhythm. We also learned that there is a surgery that can correct it so he doesn’t have to be on medicine for the rest of his life. In talking about the medication they said that he could actually go off of the meds to see if they would return. We left discussing the possibilities of stopping the medication. So all in all even though things are still up in the air we left there feeling good about things.

Adam left and went straight home and I swung by to get the girls. I was so grateful to come home to a nice warm dinner waiting for us that Ronda Johansen had brought. We sat down that night and talked about getting off the meds. I was so uncertain and a little scared but Adam was determined not to stay on them if he didn’t have to. They were really making him sick. So we decided to stop taking them and see what happens. It’s been a week now of being off the medications and he has had three episodes. One stopped on it’s own after a few seconds and the other two he was able to shock and stop after a minute. They are still scary and make me nervous and wear’s him out, but we are thrilled that everything is turning out okay. We are now just waiting for his ECO appointment so we can get more information there as well.

I have called 911 twice in my lifetime. Once on my daughter and now once for my husband. Both were such frightening experiences that I hope to never experience again. But I am so grateful for faith, blessings and prayers and that everything is going to be okay.

2010 Flood!

Dixie's 100 year flood 6 years ago hit again...94 years too early !! For the entire week before Christmas it rained and rained non stop.  The rivers filled up again and people were getting ready to evacuate their homes again. Luckily, we didn't lose any homes or lives this year, but it did provide some great pictures.

My parents live in Green Valley and the Santa Clara river runs through their back yard. It is crazy to look out the Kitchen window and watch this fury cruise by.  It stopped raining just in time for Christmas. Christmas day was beautiful and sunny and then the next day...rain again.

Tis' the Season

Gingerbread houses
and baking!
Dipping pretzels, making fudge, Carmel popcorn, divinity and

sugar cookies.

I turned over the frosting of the sugar cookies to the girls this year, they did a great job.

Losee Christmas Party!

My family's annual Christmas Party.
This year it started a week earlier with the girls getting clues in the mail as to where the party was going to be this year. After four envelopes we had the directions but the girls still had no idea. The girls took the clues and directed Adam as to where to drive. We ended up at Ben and Stacy's house.
There we ate some munchies and did the nativity. The last two years Stacy has sent out the parts before the party so everyone already knows who they are and their lines, it has gone much better with less fights. After the nativity we were handed another envelope containing another clue...we were headed to a different destination.

This one led us to my mom's house. Here we ate a big yummy Christmas dinner. After eating we were handed another envelope. This one led us to ...

Terry and Sheri's house for ice cream sundaes and

watching past years nativities (this is always hilarious)..

and hanging with cousins... after ice cream we were handed yet again another envelope. This time it led us to our house for games and presents.

Calli, Jorrin, Austin and Uncle Brandon spelling "Merry Christmas" with their bums.

Grandma, Stacy and Grandpa spelling out the word ELF with their bodies.

Presents...electric toothbrushes and pajamas for the grand kids.

All the grand kids in their pajamas.

All the grand kids giving uncle Brandon a hug for the $5 he gave each of them. This is my little brother and the only sibling not married, so as you can tell he is the favorite uncle.

By the time we ended the night it was past midnight. After opening his new BYU blanket, my dad decided to try it out. What a fun party!

Merry Christmas 2010

Well, again I was just so excited Christmas morning that I forgot to take a lot of pictures. But here's a few I did get.
The girls checking out their stockings.  They always come down the stairs and head straight for the kitchen to see if Santa ate their cookies and then they do their stockings and then head downstairs to the tree.

Sadie, Gentry and Adam opening gifts.

Calli can't believe she just got a gun...me neither. It was all Adam's idea but she loved it.
We had a great year. Here's some of the family's favorite gifts.
Calli: PSP w/ games and movie, gun, helicopter
Sadie: ipod w/ Disney skin, pillow pet, Disney snow globe, squirt stuffed animal
Gentry: Ipod w/ Disney skin, baby, Lotso, sock monkey
Adam: helicopter, new game table for bonus room
Robyn: Disney skin for ipod, preschool curriculum, camera
Each year we always pick names and buy for that person and then open the gift on Christmas eve. This year I wanted to do something different. We picked names and we had to MAKE something for that person. I LOVED this. It was so much fun watching them brainstorm about what to make. They put way more thought into this gift then they have in the past. They were all so creative and did an awesome job. I also enjoyed the girls pulling me aside to have me secretly help them make their gift. Here's the gifts we made:
Calli -Me She sewed me a Christmas hot pad...so cute
Sadie-Gentry she sewed a turtle stuffed animal (Squirt from Nemo)
Gentry - Adam she made him a bookmark because he loves to read. She came up with this idea all by herself. I loved it.
Me-Sadie I made Sadie a sleeping bag and matching pillow for her baby
Adam-Calli He made her a marshmallow gun...she loved it.
Also, this year I made everyone in the family a pillowcase. I try to make at least one thing each year. I just loved the pillowcases they were super easy and way cute.

New Years Eve!

We brought in the new year in Enterprise this year, celebrating with Adam's family.
We drove up Friday afternoon and partied at Amber's house. We ate, played poker, rock band, laughed and visited until midnight. Then all the kids went out and banged pots and pans and then we went to Adam's
brothers house and had a big slumber party. The next morning we got up and  went back to Adam sister's for breakfast and to get in our snow gear. The rest of the day was spent out on the hills sledding.
Sadie getting ready to go down the hill.

Calli, of course can do nothing easy, after going down a couple time on her bum she decided she needed a challenge and started "surfing" down. This eventually resulted in crashing into a fence and scratching up her face.

Taking my turn going down with Gentry.

At the bottom of the hill looking up.

Sadie flying down the hill. She always looked like a fish out of water, her arms and legs would just fly everywhere.

Adam getting ready to "surf" down the hill.

After a while Gentry got cold and ended up in the car playing her DS.
It was freezing. The night before it was -4 degrees.

Sadie as happy as can be with her hot chocolate.

After sledding we all went over to the cemetery. There was a huge mound of snow at the entrance so we couldn't drive in. So, we all got out and trudged in. It was freezing and in some parts the snow was shin deep. I have a new appreciation for the pioneers.

The headstone all decked out for Christmas.

Snow Day!

January 3, 2011
The last day of Christmas vacation we woke up to a white surprise.

The girls took full advantage of the snow and the last day of their break before going back to school. They played in the snow at the park and at various friends houses all over the neighborhood. They had snowball fights, built and destroyed a snowman and went sledding on any hill they could find. They played from 10am to 6pm and by the time they came home they were snowed out.
