Calli had originally signed up to run with a couple friends, but with the uncertainty of Covid, they ended up backing out. Calli decided to run it anyway. I was so proud of her to decide to run it even if she had to run it alone.
She had to work Friday, and since we were already up there camping, (another post)Adam and I drove to Tropic to get her packet for her.
We got to drive the entire course which was pretty cool to see exactly where she would run.
So pretty!
They already had the mile markers out. After we got back to camp, we continued calling and texting her to see how she was coming and what time she hoped to arrive. She kept running into obstacles causing it to become later and later, the later it got the more anxious she became and wondered if she wanted to still run. We talked her into just getting to Bryce Canyon even if she didn't end up running so she could still camp and have fun with us. She said she didn't want to quit and if she came, she'd run. She finally got on the road around 6:30 pm about five hours later than she anticipated. She did awesome, driving by herself and arriving around 9:30pm. Once she got there, she was able to just relax and look forward to the race. We tucked in around 11:00 knowing it would be a busy morning.
We woke up around 4:30am to make sure Calli was up and ready and make sure she had everything she needed. We woke Sadie and Gentry up at 5:00am and left for the starting line around 5:15.
Love this Picture!! She was pretty excited at this point and just wanted to get out on the course and see how she did. This was her first race, she has only run for fun. She'll usually go out running once or twice a week and runs 8-10 miles. She had never run 13 but with most of it down hill, she figured she'd be okay.
The race started at 6:00am and the runners had until 9:00 to cross the finish line. She was hoping just to finish in time.
The course was from Ruby's Inn in Bryce Canyon, to Tropic and then ended in Cannonville.
And they're off. Once the runners got on the course, we were allowed to drive to the finish line.
As we drove, we looked for her...we kept going and going still not seeing her, we wondered if maybe she had slipped into the bathroom along the way and we missed her, but as we approached mile 6 we passed her. Mile 6, we couldn't believe she was almost halfway done already. She was keeping pace with the 1:50 runner so we knew if she continued at that pace when to expect her.
Pictures they took on the course with a drone.
We made it to the park with a few minutes to spare.
A few minutes before we expected her to come in we went to the finish line to watch for her. We were surprised to see her sooner than we thought. As soon as she saw that finish line she sprinted to the end. She finished is 1:55:39!
Getting her medal!
She did it!! She said for the most part, she felt really good and enjoyed it a lot but the last two miles were the hardest so when she saw the finish line, she booked it just to be done. Haha!
Could not be more proud of this girl!
She found her friend Ally from work who had run it as well.
Calli's results: Gun Time 1:55:47 Overall Place 225
Chip Time 1:55:39 and 11th place in her category
Pace was 8.50 per mile and 103 out of all the females.
